It's all clear now

Off to the basement of the Montgomery Legion Hall on Kent Street. Ottawa Explosion had corralled New Orleans' M.O.T.O. into doing a show. Paul Caporino has been banging out meat-and-potatoes punk pop for 30 years now, so I figured I'd have to go see him play.

The opening acts were a pair of Canadian bands, touring from out west. First up were The Moby Dicks, who hail from Lethbridge, Alberta, and are responsible for both some peppy punk pop and at least in part the mighty Mammoth Cave Recording Co. The MBs have undergone a fairly radical membership shift, exchanging a tall guy and a short woman for a couple of Endangered Apes. There was a Rolling Stone cover in there somewhere, I think (or maybe I imagined it).

Evan! Joel! Paul!

And since my poor Nikon is still being repaired and I'm stuck with my Olympus I figure I might as well keep making use of its relatively easy-to implement monotone function.

On to Needles//Pins, who are pals with The Moby Dicks and share a split-single with them. Bassist Tony X and guitarist Adam Ess both fled Ontario towns when they were younger (and reflected on shows they saw at the Legion Hall a decade ago), met drummer Macy in Vancouver and have a rawboned take on the pop-punk genre. They also covered Teenage Head's Picture My Face.

Ess! Macy! X!

Yeah, I shot some pointless B&W pics of them too ....

M.O.T.O. is basically Paul Caporino and whoever he ropes in. In this case, Ottawa's own Allie Hanlon was elevated to the M.O.T.O. drumseat as Caporino banged his way through tunes you'll swear you heard elsewhere if you listen to any amount of punk pop (and actually have, if you've caught The White Wires doing Rats).

Paul! (And a shadowy Allie!)

A less shadowy Allie!

Definitely a lot of crowd enthusiasm ... Jon Bartlett was so thrilled he dumped a beer on me.
