The beat goes on

With my holiday hibernation over, it was time to head out once again into the cold - okay, into the moderate coolness - for a show at the House of Targ. Back in August 2010, Nerves and Beat legend Paul Collins brought his new crew to Babylon for a high-energy show with The Walnut Kids, Mother's Children and Sonic Avenues. Everyone was thrilled by that show, and a similarly large crowd packed Targ for his return. Once again, Mother's Children and a couple of Montreal combos rounded out the bill. First up, newish outfit Jonesy brought some Dolls-style swagger and rude lyrics to the stage. Here's the rhythm section of Vinny Ramone and Dave (from Dagger Eyes, that is).

The Pale Lips took the stage next for some candy-coated garage pop demolition. The band should be releasing their debut LP this year on Hosehead records. Here's the rhythm section, Jamie on bass and Lynn on drums.

It's been a while since I saw Mother's Children - over a year since the 2014 Seasons Beatings show . No surprise they'd be on the bill again since frontman Ken was a major mover in getting Paul Collins and Co. back in town. They ripped through a quick set to make way for the headliner.

Paul Collin was even more enthusiastic about being in Ottawa than the last time he was here; he definitely seems to get a kick out of sharing the stage with bands who he's inspired (he joked they were "just a few years younger than me"). For this sortie he's teamed up with The Low Doses from New Jersey to serve as his backing band. Here he is with Joi La Cour.
